This is a Yamaha TX81Z FM Tone Generator, a 1U rack-mount synthesizer module from the late 1980s (serial number L3157, date code HJ87, manufactured in Japan). It features 4-operator FM synthesis with 8-voice polyphony, 128 preset voices, MIDI In/Out/Thru, cassette interface, two 1/4-inch mono audio outputs (Output I/II and I/MIX), a headphone output, and a front-panel LCD display with mode select, parameter, data entry, and master volume controls. The unit powers on and boots correctly to the Play Single mode (confirmed in photos).
